After uncountable delays and god knows how many fake apps in the Play Store. BBM for Android is about to really arrive in Google Play and the Apple App Store. This will mark the first time Blackberry's premier messaging service has been available on a non-Blackberry device. You'll be able to download the app today, but you might not be able to actually use it.
BBM for Android was leaked a few weeks back and the flood of users caused server shutdown for the company. This time the number of users will be controlled by a waiting list that you'll signup for in the app. Just enter an email address and Blackberry will let you know when the time has come for you to start using the app.
The company promises to move people through the queue as quickly as possible, but you'll probably want to get on it early if you just can't wait. All those leaked installs at least show there is still some demand for BBM even if the company's phones aren't of much interest anymore.
We will let you know when the app is live.
UPDATE: Blackberry Messenger has gone live in certain countries on the Play Store and worldwide on the Apple App Store. To download click here.
BBC has finally started advertising the 50th anniversary
special of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who!
The promotion includes the poster showing all 11 ''Doctors'
till date. For full size image click here.
Also released is a teaser trailer for the upcoming special —
titled “Day of the Doctor.” The special airs Nov. 23 and is going to be
broadcast live simultaneously in several countries. The teaser shows all the
previous doctors, from William Hartnell to Matt Smith (and a few foes). Although it is
still missing any actual new footage from the upcoming special.
Recently, I met a guy who put some really interesting, yet
basic questions in front of me regarding stuff on Windows, Android, etc. This
gave me the idea of starting a new series ‘TechGooner Explains’. Here we go with the first one..
The moment your PC starts showing problems the first thing that comes in your
head is “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” This is the standard
response any computer geek will give you (even if they have not watched The IT
Crowd). So the question that pops up is, why don’t geeks try to identify and
fix problems rather than use the blunt hammer of “reboot”?
Firstly, remember this reset philosophy/process is not
restricted to Windows, it is applicable on routers, phones, iPads, sound
systems and even software’s! Ever had extensions crash in Chrome?
To illustrate the requirement of a reboot, I’m going to use the most famous
example – the blue screen of death! The problem is usually caused because of
problems in hardware drivers or hardware malfunction. Windows has reached a
state where it does not understand the error. So it stops all functions, shows the
blue-screen of death and gathers the require information about the problem in
the background. After this Windows automatically restarts the computer for you.
This restart fixes the blue screen of death.
Another usual occurrence is the loss of Graphic Drivers.
Earlier (Windows XP and the ones before it), a crash in the Graphic Drivers
would ‘hang’ the system, and one had to force reboot it. Windows has improved,
the desktop will lose its fancy graphical effects for a few moments before
regaining them. Behind the scenes, Windows is restarting the malfunctioning
graphics driver.
But why doesn't Windows simply fix the problem rather than
restarting the computer itself? Well, because
it can’t — the code has encountered a problem and stopped working completely,
so there’s no way for it to continue. By restarting, the code can start from
square one and hopefully it won’t encounter the same problem again.
Examples of Restarting Fixing Problems
Windows is Slow: Windows running slowly, usually means that
a program is misbehaving and using up a major chunk of the CPU. A geek could
head to the task manager and look around, hoping to locate the misbehaving
process an end it. If an average user encountered this same problem, they could
simply reboot their computer to fix it.
Browser is Using Too Much Memory: Internet browsers
including Firefox and Chrome are well known for memory leaks. Over time, the
browser would often consume more and more memory, getting larger and larger and
slowing down. Closing the application will cause it to relinquish all of its
memory. When it starts again, it will start from a clean state without any
leaked memory. This doesn’t just apply to Firefox and Chrome, but applies to
any software with memory leaks.
Internet or Wi-Fi Network Problems: If you have a problem
with your Wi-Fi or Internet connection, the software on your router or modem
may have encountered a problem. Resetting the router — just by unplugging it
from its power socket and then plugging it back in — is a common solution for
connection problems. On the computer front, resetting the adapter works, but
rebooting does the same trick.
In all cases, a restart wipes away the current state of the
software. Any code that’s stuck in a misbehaving state will be swept away, too.
When you restart, the computer or device will bring the system up from scratch,
restarting all the software from square one so it will work just as well as it
was working before.
Ultimately, the answer is that “resetting a computer wipes away the current state of the software, including any problems that have developed, and allows it to start over from square one.” It’s easier and faster to start from a clean state than identify and fix any problems that may be occurring — in fact, in some cases, it may be impossible to fix problems without beginning from that clean state.

If the numerous leaks/rumors surrounding the Nexus 5 were
not sufficient to convince you of the latest device from the Mountain View
company, this 'leak' should do it. The device appeared in the device listings in the
US Play Store out of nowhere (Yes, it was taken down quickly).
Feast your eyes, on the NEXUS 5.
The price for the 16 GB model is listed as $349. While
that's a higher barrier to entry than we saw with the Nexus 4, which also cost
$349 at 16GB but had a $299 8GB model, it's still an attractively low price for
what appears to be a more than capable device. Google's tagline for the LG-made
phone is "Capture the everyday and the epic in fresh new ways."
Nexus 5 is expected to have a 5-inch Full HD display (441
PPI), a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera,
NFC and wireless charging. Let’s stop a second to let that marinate. Even fans
of Samsung devices, which consistently have the latest, most bleeding-edge
specs, will be fawning over the Nexus 5’s potential. It sounds nothing short of
amazing. Not only will it be fast, and compatible with plenty of networks here
in the U.S, it should feature the latest version of Android, KitKat 4.4. Other
possible specs include a 2,300mAh battery for the 16GB model, 3,000mAh model
for the 32GB model, a cavalcade of sensors, notification light, Bluetooth 4.0
and Slimport compatibility.
Google is yet to announce anything official about the Nexus
5, but it can't be far off now.
In the last few weeks, most of the TV channels announced
their respective show lineups for this fall. While many favorites are on their
way back — who doesn’t want another year of The Big Bang Theory? And one of the
best show’s final season is set to kick of (a.k.a. – Breaking Bad). There are
also brand new shows to entertain come September. I’ve picked out the 10 series
to keep your eyes on.
1. Sleepy Hollow
The series is considered a "modern-day retelling" of the 1820 short
story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving. With a
time-travel conspiracy element that brings Crane and the Horseman to the modern
day and then sends them on a trip across the country to uncover hidden clues
left in patriotic locations in order to defeat each other, this show could end
up becoming a crowd favorite.
Premiere: September 16, 2013 on FOX
2. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D almost feels like the fantasy of a
network looking for a sure-fire hit. The director of one of the most successful
superhero movie ever (The Avengers), writing and directing the pilot for an
all-new original spin-off from that movie? It’s hard to imagine that anyone
truly believed that ABC wouldn’t pick up Joss Whedon’s Avengers offshoot from
the moment it was announced. Add in the return of Clark Gregg as the
apparently-not-deceased Agent Phil Coulson, and the question isn’t whether the
show will be a hit, but just how big a hit the show will be.
Premiere: September 24, 2013 on ABC
3. Almost Human
With Alcatraz and Undercovers being cancelled early on. Its high
time JJ Abrams delivers his magic on the small screen. Will Almost Human, the
new science fiction series about a cop working with a robotic partner who might
be more alive than he is be that series, only time will tell. Abrams also
brings along some of his Star Trek partners: Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy) playing the
lead character, while Star Trek writers (and Fringe co-creators) Roberto Orci
and Alex Kurtzman serve as fellow executive producers alongside Abrams. Could
this be the weekly sci-fi summer blockbuster that we’ve been waiting for?
Premiere: November 4, 2013 on FOX
4. The 100
Nearly a century after a nuclear war has destroyed
civilization, a spaceship sends 100 juvenile delinquents back to Earth to
investigate the possibility of re-colonizing. Based on the forthcoming Kass
Morgan book of the same name.
Premiere: TBA (midseason) on CW
5. The Goldbergs
I’ll admit, I did not know of this show before I started
writing the article. But, Goldbergs has two things going for it. Firstly, the
show has amazing buzz from those who’ve actually seen the pilot. Secondly, it’s
a quasi-autobiographical show created by Adam Goldberg, the man behind Fanboys,
Breaking In and How to Train A Dragon, which means it’s unlikely to be dull.
Premiere: September 24, 2013 on ABC
6. The Blacklist
The world's most wanted criminal (James Spader) mysteriously
turns himself in and offers to give up everyone he has ever worked with. His
only condition: He will only work with a newly minted FBI agent (Megan Boone)
with whom he appears to have no connection.
Premiere: September 23, 2013 on NBC
7. Brooklyn Nine-Nine
With FOX’s recent success in the comedy genre, the show
looks to do it once again. If the idea of Samberg as a laid back detective who
has to deal with a hard-ass new boss doesn’t immediately appeal, perhaps the
strength of the cast (the show also includes The Expendables‘ Terry Crews and
Chelsea Peretti and Homicide: Life on the Street’s Andre Braugher) will.
Premiere: September 17, 2013 on FOX
8. The Tomorrow People
A remake of a relatively-obscure British children’s show
from the 1970s, The Tomorrow People gives the CW a science-fiction teen drama.
As the next generation of humanity — spoilers, they have telepathic powers! And
finds themselves under investigation and persecution from “The Man”
Premiere: October 9, 2013 on CW
9. Dracula
The name itself tells what the show is all about. Only the
fact that it has “The producers of Downton Abbey take on the Dracula story”,
and the addition of The Tudors‘ Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Vlad himself (alongside
Merlin‘s Katie McGrath as his true love, Mina) makes me put this show on the
list.
Premiere: October 25, 2013 on NBC
10. Low Winter Sun
With Low Winter Sun, AMC is bringing a UK based drama into
Detroit. It involves two cops who commit a crime, only then be tasked with
investigating that crime, in the process attempting to make sure no one finds
out they are in fact the criminals being hunted.
Premiere: August 11, 2013 on AMC

The sequel to one of the most famous multiplayer online
battle arena (MOBA) is finally out of beta and available as a free download for
everyone. The frequently updated beta for Valve's Dota 2 is over, and the
free-to-play MOBA has officially launched on Steam.
The developer warns "there may be a short wait for you
to download the game.” due to the heavy load on the server. You'll still have
to queue to play, so the sooner you install, the better chances you'll have of
playing. "You'll see your place in line," the developer writes,
"and when it is your turn we'll send you an email letting you know you're
in. We'll begin sending those emails this week."
Dota 2 is a notoriously difficult game with a hardcore community,
so be sure to check out the various noob's guide to the game before you jump
in, if you're new to the game.
The high price of the Next Launcher 3D deters most people
from trying out this “different” launcher. But, today you can pick up your copy
of Next Launcher 3D for free. This alternative launcher is the work of the same
team that made the famous Go Launcher, and the paid version has over 100,000
downloads, even at a price of INR 540 ($16).
To get your free copy follow the following steps:
1. Download the trial version of Next Launcher 3D to get
started from HERE.
2. Choose Get Free when the splash screen comes up.
3. To unlock it, open the menu and go into preferences.
Since this interface is going to take some getting used to, I'll just let you
know the menu button is in the far right dock position.
4. In preferences, scroll all the way down and tap on About
Full Version.
5. Choose the Activate option, and put in
"nextlauncher3d" as the account, and "appoftheday" as the
code (both without the quotes). The app should be unlocked and you can play
around without worrying about the trial period expiring.
Sadly this does not tie your app to your google account,
hence you do not get any updates. So think about backing up the app using
Helium or Titanium Backup if you want to be safe. Next Launcher also overrides
the background image in all launchers when it's installed. You can change it
back, but still a small annoyance.
Even if the flashy UI isn't your piece of cake, it's worth
grabbing just to play around with.
Amazon.com, the world's largest online retailer, has finally
made an entry into the fast-growing Indian e-commerce market with its web
portal Amazon.in.
Buyers can browse through a catalogue of 7 million local and
imported books and 12,000 titles from movies and TV shows to begin with. The
company is planning to expand its product footprint to cameras, mobiles and
other electronics devices in the coming months.
Unlike the US website, which has both Amazon owned products as
well as third party products. The Indian website does not own any
merchandise, but merely acts as an aggregator to all the retailers who wish to
exhibit their products on the website. Amazon will not stock and sell its own
products because India's FDI regulations do not allow online multibrand
retailers to sell their own products.
Amazon has signed up 100 vendors across the country so far
and has set up a 1.5 lakh sqft fulfillment center in Mumbai to service online
orders. Any of the lakhs of retailers in India can hope to sign up with Amazon
and sell their products online.
"Our vision is to become a trusted and meaningful sales
channel for retailers of all sizes across India, enabling them to succeed and
grow their business online," said Amit Agarwal, vice president, and
country manager, Amazon India.
It will be interesting to see, how the company fares with
the stiff competition from Indian retailers like Flipkart, Snapdeal and
Homeshop18.
Amazon India is already operating Junglee.com, a
price-comparison portal launched in February last year. Instead of selling products
on its web page, Junglee.com sends visitors to the website of the seller.

I/O is admittedly Google’s biggest event every year for the
past 6 years now. It is during these 3 days that Google shows of the future of
Google and its products. These three days in the past have seen some of the
biggest announcements from the Mountain View Company - from the Nexus 7 to
Google TV, Chrome to Glass and everything in between.
The Google I/O 2013 began yesterday, and the opening keynote
stretched for more than three hours (it began at 10 PM IST). The earlier rumors
were pointing for a refurbished Nexus 7, Android 4.3, maybe a Nexus 5 or the
Motorola X phone. But as the keynote progressed, with new features and updates
dropping left and right, it became more and more evident what this year’s I/O
was all about: Google services and apps. And that does not make the I/O a
failure, rather this move was a good thing by Google.
For the past few year’s Google has been giving its OS an
upgrade nearly every 6 months. This has led to an already fragmented market getting
worse. As a developer, for your apps to reach the majority – one has to support
devices from Android v2.1 and up. If Google shifts to an annual cycle, by
releasing new Android versions in December along with the updated tablets and
mobile. It will not only help reduce the fragmentation on Android, but also launches
during the holiday season could be beneficial to the OEM’s (If they can keep up
with the demand).
This also makes the I/O event more for the developers and a bit less for the consumers, which in my eyes is exactly what this 3 days event is about. For me Google I/O has been about new services from Google and how a developer can use them. The few new hardware/software launches that I appreciated were revolutionary (Chrome, Glass, even the first Nexus 7), rather than being just evolutionary. The launches (of upgrades in products) should occur at press conferences and not at a developer conference.
The focus of this year’s I/O was on all the kinds of things Google
is doing for developers so that they can write better things. It showed how
Google services are doing amazing things on top of Android (and also Chrome). For
a complete round-up of this year’s I/O – Click Here (Android Police) or Here (The Verge).
Come May 2014, Kiefer Sutherland (a.k.a Jack Bauer) will be
back as an agent of the Counter Terrorist Unit, as he races against time to
stop various terrorist plots. Kevin Reilley the broadcasting chief at Fox
announced that 24 will be returning in 2014 via his twitter account.
But this time the season (ninth) will consist only of 12
episodes according to Brian Stelter of The New York Times. This is a big
deviation from its longstanding format, where each hour-long episode represents
an hour in realtime. It was the unique approach of "real time"that
had caught the attention of the public back in 2001 when the show began.
Fox plans to switch things up for Jack Bauer's ninth
day-long adventure. "What they'll be able to do is go in chronological
order of the day, but skip hours," Reilly said. That means each hour
viewers see will still be "real time," but 24's writers will be able
to tell a tighter, more engrossing narrative. Apparently that idea came fromshowrunner Howard Gordon, who told Reilly that each 24-episode season of the
show ultimately contained about 12 episodes of compelling storyline.
Reilly says the show is likely to return to Fox at some
point in May 2014. Update: According to Zap2It the 12 episode series will be called "24: Live Another Day"

Today Bethesda Softworks unveiled their latest offering Wolfenstein:
The New Order. Wolfenstein remains as one of the most iconic first shooter
games till date, and a reimagined take on the classic first-person shooter is
under development at MachineGames.
"As fans of the series, working on this game is an
honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure
experience that will make FPS fans proud," said Jens Matthies, creative
director at developer MachineGames.
The game is set in an alternate history in the 1960’s, in
which the Nazis won the World War II. The game will also feature the return of
the protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz. The first trailer also shows indication of
robotic enemies.
The publisher announced the title today, tentatively setting
a Q4 2013 shipping timeframe for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next
generation consoles.
With a childhood filled with memories of the original title, I'm really looking forward to this game!
With 21 May coming even closer, the excitement around the
new Xbox grows even higher.
First the discussions were mainly about the name with Xbox
720, Xbox Loop and Xbox Durango (which turned out to be the internal testing
name for the device). The hocus-pocus around the name soon died with most
people anticipating it to be called just “Xbox”. This make a lot of sense to me
as it conveys a powerful sense of commitment. It says that it isn’t the next
Xbox, or the latest Xbox, or anything like that — just simply the definitive
machine. This would be similar to Apple’s strategy of naming the most recent of
its tablet offering simply as “iPad”.
A now-former Microsoft employee was even caught defending the controversial feature
The topic that stirred up quite a storm on the internet was
the “Always on, Always Connected.” rumor about the next Xbox. I’m not so sure
where it originated, it was about the requirement of active internet connection
to use any feature of the next Xbox. Right from the start I was against this,
and I always thought of it as a gigantic mistake by Microsoft. It would hand the
business to Sony with its PS4, and basically tell people with unreliable
internet that they shouldn’t buy the console.
It was quite a relief to see an internal letter pop up onArs Techina. “There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work
without an Internet connection, and those should ‘just work’ regardless of
their current connection status,” the email says, it also goes on to state
single player gaming to be one such scenario. The fact that it’s a mass email
suggests that this is a recent change, or at least a recent clarification, in
Microsoft’s official policy. A company however big it might be never sends an
e-mail to everyone to say, "Just FYI, the policy we've had this whole time
is still the policy. Keep doing what you've been doing."
How good the next Xbox will be? We still don’t know. Will it
be better than the PS4? No idea. But luckily the fears that the console will be
completely useless when your broadband goes down have been overblown.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown was one of my most favorite game from
2012, and by far the best turn based strategy game I have ever played. So I was
very excited when news of a new XCOM game began surfacing a month ago. Finally 2K
games has officially taken of the covers from their new game - The Bureau: XCOM
Declassified.
The game is set in the 1960s with the backdrop of the Cold
War. Unlike the previous games, there is no XCOM at the start, and players take
on the role of agent William Carter, who is assigned to The Bureau. Through
Carter’s eyes, players will see the “secret story” behind the birth of the XCOM
initiative.
“Secret invasion” is the key word in this version. The
earlier XCOM shooter stories are all set in a world ravaged by alien invasion.
On the other hand, XCOM Declassified gets more secretive, with the all-out
global invasion replaced by a more covert assault. It hopefully won’t make a
ton of difference on the battlefield, as the idea is still to put players in
the shoes of the agents on the field.
With the added twists from the Cold War, keeping the thing a
secret from the Russians and other enemies is certainly a part of the game. So
part of the story that you’ll be experiencing is how the war is kept in the
shadows. How XCOM is started and then slightly hidden from the world until it
is needed again.
Other than the jump from first-person to third-person, the
game will largely be the same as it was back in 2012 in gameplay terms. You
control one soldier on the battlefield – Carter – but you also issue tactical
commands to a squad of agents using the game’s new “Battle Focus” interface.
The Battle Focus interface according to 2K is the method to
direct your squad and keep yourself alive at the same time. The creative
director Morgan Gray explained that “our mission statement here is to move
beyond the turn-based isometric God’s Eye View on the battlefield and to put
you into the boots of this squad leader, where the bullets are flying in the
middle of the mix, having to basically direct your squad and keep your own head
from being shot off all at the same time.” Will wait out to see what this
actually means in terms of gameplay.
The rest looks to be quite similar, improving soldier skills,
researching alien life forms, building advanced weapons and defeating the
aliens. At least that is what the fans of last year’s game are hoping.
Will this game developed by 2K Marin outdo the last year’s
title developed by Firaxis. Only time will tell. The game releases on 20 August
in the US and on 23 Aug in Europe. It will be available for PlayStation 3, Xbox
360, and PC platforms for $59.99.
Expect more previews and details over the coming months,
providing us with more insight as we move toward this June’s E3. You can watch the teaser trailer below.

At the start of the month, everyone was excited about the
Facebook Event, which finally revealed Facebook’s new launcher for Android –
Facebook Home. A few days later an apk was leaked which worked on nearly any
mobile. But, Facebook was quick to pull the plug on the app. Yesterday, finally
Facebook Home was launched on the Play Store.
Sadly Facebook Home currently supports only Samsung Galaxy
S3, Galaxy Note 2, HTC One, One X, or One X+ (and HTC First). At first I side-loaded
the apk (as I had done with the leak), surprisingly Facebook was checking the
phone build, and all you get is this screen.
Luckily, Android is open-source and highly modifiable. You
can change nearly anything, even your device. Hence running Facebook Home on your device is
pretty easy.
Method 1: Rooted Devices Only
1. Install any build.prop editor app from
the Play Store, such as this or this.
1. Uninstall your current Facebook
and Facebook Messenger apps.
2. Install the following apps.
Facebook Home apk link and Facebook apk link.
3. You are good to go!
4. Do note that by this method your
apps will no longer get updates on the Play Store.
My personal experience with Facebook Home, has not been the
best. I simply do not like it. It looks useful for those who use their smartphones
only for Facebook. Although I love the “chat-heads” feature (more on that in
the next article).
Please let us know your views on Facebook Home in the
comments below.
P.S: I’m not gonna do a complete review of the app – as I
find that my views are much similar to those by Android Police.

A redesigned Google Play Store has been making a buzz for some
time now, with Android Police getting their hands on a leaked apk. A YouTube
employee also posted a screenshot. The whole world was geared up for its launch
at the Google I/O next month, but it seems that the Mountain View company did
not have it in its mega event plans, as a blog post on the Android Blog has
confirmed that the new Play Store will roll out to phones and tablets today
itself!
The new cards based look definitely looks cleaner and aesthetically
more beautiful. According to the blog, the new UI focuses on bigger images,
grouping similar content and offering recommendations as you scroll down. All
devices running Android 2.2 or higher will get the update.
Although the rollout starts worldwide today, with millions
of devices the load on Google’s servers, it may be a few weeks till the update
comes to your phone. Side loading the apk is an option, although no apk file is
available yet (Update: Scroll to bottom for the link).
It is quite interesting to watch the UI changes Matias
Duarte has brought into Android after joining the team (earlier he worked for –
WebOS). He made the stock Google experience lovable with ICS (Android 4.0),
brought out the aesthetic Google Cards with JB (Android 4.1/4.2) and now the
clean Play Store UI. One can only wait with eager anticipation for Key Lime Pie
(Android 5.0).

Update: Android Police have once again provided us all with the apk. The app is signed by Google and upgrades your existing Play Store. The new version of the Play Store is 4.0.25. DOWNLOAD HERE.
According to a post by Digital Trends, Google is planning to
acquire the most famous cross-platform messaging app – WhatsApp in a reportedly
billion dollar deal. The site reports, that the discussion has been ongoing for
quite a while with the final price being the thorn in the agreement, with
WhatsApp playing “hardball” to drive up the price.
WhatsApp has already shown the world that its monetization
scheme is extremely effective. Its yearly but nominal $0.99 subscription fee
keeps the service ad-free. Behind the scenes however, WhatsApp also generates
revenue through profitable partnerships with international telecommunications
companies. Whatever Whatsapp is doing is working, it is doing it right, with
declining SMS usage around the world being directly linked to the success of
the app.
With Facebook taking a huge step forward in the messaging
ecosystem, via Facebook Home and the continuously improving Messenger (with
free voice calls), Google’s attempt to acquire WhatsApp feel like steps in the
proper direction.
It is also important to remember that, according to many
reports Google is set to discard its numerous messaging services for an all in
one – Google Babble (or Babel). Google Babble is expected to be revealed in May at thee
Google I/O event. If Google wants WhatsApp to be a part of Babble, it may well
have to hurry and get the deal done and dusted.
Will Google continue support for iOS (remember, Sparrow the
mail client?)? Will Google integrate it into the Android OS? All these question
remain unanswered and only time will tell. Nevertheless, if Google does manage
this acquisition, it will be a great step forward for Google in the world of
communication.
So far Google and WhatsApp have not released any statements regarding the rumor.
